Class Organization The term “Basics 1” and “Basics 2” names the time your child has either math/science or ELA/social studies. Wooten’s B1 math and science class goes to Worley for B2 ELA and social studies. Worley’s B1 ELA and social studies class goes to Wooten for B2 math and science.

Exciting Field Trips Asheboro Zoo on Thursday, October 15 Fort Caswell on Thursday, May 5 Fifth grade dues of $138 cover the following costs: agenda/planner, Monday folder, science goggles (coming soon), zoo field trip, and Fort Caswell field trip.

Collaboration Fifth grade teachers believe strongly in collaboration. This collaboration includes teachers as well as academic specialists. All teachers participate in planning meetings to design lessons that meet the individual learning needs of each student. Our AIG coordinator, Mrs. Parham, will also be working with each AIG student in both ELA/social studies and math/science.

Technology Technology is integrated into math and science. For instance, we will utilize the following technology through instruction: Apple TV Ipad apps such as EduCreations Student created content videos Discovery Learning Quia and many more…

Math and Science High expectations Fast paced, challenging Hands-on and based on real life Inquiry-based science instruction Utilization of science notebooks and interactive math notebooks

Differentiation and Instruction Pre-assessment for each unit of instruction Differentiated math groups based on pre-assessment results Varying assignments and assessments to meet student needs Flexible grouping by standard Math group meetings with teacher Focus on learning styles Hands-on, inquiry-based

Homework Assigned on a weekly basis All work needs to be shown to receive full credit Examples of math homework assignments: math contract, Problem of the Week, Quia homework (math and science)

Mathematics Curriculum Common Core Specific standards can be found on the website under the k-12 curriculum tab at the top left.

Fifth Grade Curriculum Operations and Algebraic Thinking Write and interpret numerical expressions. Analyze patterns and relationships. Number and Operations in Base Ten Understand the place value system. Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths. Number and Operations—Fractions Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions. Measurement and Data Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system. Represent and interpret data. Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition. Geometry Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.

SSA: Common Core 6+ If your child is enrolled in the Common Core 6+ program, he/she will be receiving face-to- face instruction rather than video instruction. Students will complete the sixth grade curriculum and a portion of the seventh grade curriculum. Because this class completes 6 th and some 7 th grade curriculum, students will be receiving a separate report card for the class. Their regular fifth grade report card will be blank for math and they will have an addendum sheet with their 6+ grade. After successful completion of 6+, your student will be in 7+ next year.

Sixth Grade Curriculum Ratios and Proportional Relationships Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions. Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Geometry Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability Develop understanding of statistical variability. Summarize and describe distributions

Science Curriculum Motion and Design (basic physics through the exploration of K-Nex vehicles) Human Body Systems (how the systems of the body work together, technology integration) Ecosystems (construction of a model ecosystem using 2-liter bottles, interdependence of plants and animals) Weather (investigating weather systems)

Science Notebooks In addition to the hands-on, inquiry-based instruction, teachers utilize science notebooks to enrich the curriculum and promote high order thinking skills with the students. For additional information about science notebooks, go to science-notebooks.html

Technology Integration Let’s check out Mentimeter and take a one question parent survey.
