Incans

Today’s Vocabulary Incans – 3 rd and largest Native American empire in Mesoamerica that ruled with peace rather than war.

Incans Build an Empire Believed that the ruler was descended from the sun god. – Would bring prosperity and greatness. Empire rapidly grew in – Included more than 16 million people. Incans were diplomats and only used force when necessary.

Incan Gov’t Divided territory to be run by smaller unit under a single central gov’t. Make gov’t buildings all look the same. All roads lead to the capital. – Sped up process of mail delivery and movement of troops.

Incan Society Gov’t controlled all economic activity, including trade. Conquered areas could keep local rulers, unless they rebelled. Required conquered peoples to pay tribute. – Usually in the form of labor. Citizens were expected to work for the state and were cared for in return.

Writing & Record Keeping Didn’t have a writing system. Kept number records on knotted string. Calendar was created b/c they believed the gods ruled day and time.

Incan Religion Polytheistic – Not as many gods as the Aztecs Worshiped ruler as a descent of the sun god. Women helped in worship services. Sacrificed animals and gave gifts to gods. Temples were decorated with gold.

Incan Empire Declines Civil war to choose leader. – Weakens empire Pizarro kidnaps king in exchange for gold and silver.

Reflection What were the accomplishments of the Incans?
