Presentation transcript:

Defining the Research Ethics Research ethics involves the application of fundamental ethical principles to a variety of topics involving research, including scientific research. These include the design and implementation of research involving human experimentation, animal experimentation, various aspects of academic scandal, including scientific misconduct, regulation of research. Research ethics is most developed as a concept in medical research.

Importance of Ethics in Research  To promote the aims of research, such as knowledge, truth, and avoidance of error.  To promote the values that are essential to collaborative work, such as trust, accountability, mutual respect, and fairness.  They must be accountable to the public. Make sure that researchers who are funded by public money can be held accountable to the public.  To build public support for research. People are more likely to fund a research project if they can trust the quality and integrity of research

Educate the participants about risks and benefits Obtain consent before involving participants in the research Keep participants informed Confidentiality Protect confidential communications, such as papers or grants submitted for publication, personnel records, trade or military secrets, and patient records. Responsible Publication Publish in order to advance research and scholarship, not to advance just your own career. Avoid wasteful and duplicative publication. Non-Discrimination Avoid discrimination on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, or other factors that are not related to their scientific competence Researcher’s Responsibilities

Human Subjects Protection When conducting research on human subjects, minimize harms and risks and maximize benefits; respect human dignity, privacy, and autonomy; take special precautions with vulnerable populations; and strive to distribute the benefits and burdens of research fairly. Honesty Strive for honesty in all scientific communications. Honestly report data, results, methods and procedures, and publication status. Do not fabricate, falsify, or misrepresent data. Do not deceive colleagues, granting agencies, or the public. Legality Know and obey relevant laws and institutional and governmental policies.

Five principles for research ethics 1.Discuss intellectual property frankly 2. Be conscious of multiple roles 3. Follow informed consent rules 4. Respect confidentiality and privacy 5. Tap in to ethics resources
