DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Human Body Systems Working Together Muscles and Bones

Muscles and Bones – The Big Ideas The skeletal system and the muscular system work together to provide movement for the body. The skeletal system and the muscular system work together to protect internal organs.

Muscles and Bones – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of some systems of the body prior to this study. It will be helpful for students to use the FUN-damental, Building A Body, to review Muscles and Bones. It will also help if they are able to:Building A Body –Explain that the body is made up of systems. –Locate and name some of the parts of the skeletal and muscular systems.

Muscles and Bones – Common Misconceptions Muscles are not found all over the body. –Reality: Muscles are found all over the body. The body has over 600 muscles. Your muscles turn to fat if you quit exercising. –Reality: If a person stops exercising, his or her muscle cells may decrease in volume and become smaller. At the same time, a person may increase the volume of fat cells in his or her body. A cell can not change from one type of cell to another type of cell.

Muscles and Bones – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Muscles and Bones. Reading Passage: Bones and Muscles: Keep on Moving!Bones and Muscles: Keep on Moving! Reading Passage: The Skeleton and MusclesThe Skeleton and Muscles eBook: Bones and Muscles: Working TogetherBones and Muscles: Working Together Video Segment: Skeletal SystemSkeletal System Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Muscles and Bones – Instructional Ideas Read the reading passage, The Skeleton and Muscles. The Skeleton and Muscles –To become more aware of where bones and muscles are located, ask students to look through books to find specific bones and muscles. –While doing this, ask students to share their findings and make a class chart of bones and muscles and where they are located in the body. –Play, Simon Says, using the names of bones and muscles from this list. (i.e. “Simon says point to your patella.”)

Muscles and Bones – Instructional Ideas Watch the Video Segment, The Skeletal System. The Skeletal System –Give each student a card with the name of a bone or muscle in the body written on it. –Ask each student to write a riddle containing clues about the bone or muscle listed on the card without naming the bone or muscle. –Ask students to share their riddles while others guess what is being described. The student that guesses the answer to the first riddle shares their riddle next. –Continue in this fashion until all students have shared.
