The year Pate joined UNICEF, millions of children were suffering the effects of World War II. After World War II, European children face famine and disease. British Red Cross Who we are We are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives. Founder Jean-Henri (or Henry) Dunant was born in 1828 in the Swiss city of Geneva. He came from a wealthy, religious family. His father was a leading businessman who believed in helping others who are less fortunate. During the late 1850’s Dunant set up a company in Algeria, the violence and confusion of the battle and inadequate medical wounds affected him deeply. Over the next few years Henry concentrated on improving conditions for those affected by war. After Dunant quietly slipped away from public view and for more than 20 years lived like a beggar, the world wanted to rush to honour the man who had done so much for others. In 1901 he was honoured the first Nobel Peace prize. NEXT   
