INTRODUCTION TO NEW MEDIA DR. BURÇE ÇELİK

THE NEW NEW MEDIA Words and photos were new on the net, now videos, news feed, RSS, apps are there. New hardwares such as ipad, android mobiles, iphones, smart phones, tablets etc. The hope is that new kind of journalism will enhance companies’ earnings; their fear is that if they don’t adapt they will lose audiences’ attention.

The New New Media Videos- create sustained engagement, but many news organizations found it to be expensive and difficult to produce. They don’t get much ad traffic. Mobile devices- create great access to news but screens are small. Tablets, especially ipad created intensive experience but Apple insisted on charging higher fees and controlling economically valuable information.

The new new media First it was convergence: TV, newspaper, magazine and pure online sites all started to look the same. Now comes a new divergence: online journalism organizations must distribute news into distinctly different modes of presentation.

The new new media By the end of 2011, 60 million ipads are in the market, and new tablets are entering the market. Approx. there are ipad users in Turkey. Apple’s strategies of pricing trouble the news orgns, it wants 30% cut of any subscriptions paid through iTunes and do not share the users’ information with the news organizations unless customers agree. So they do not know the readers’ profile. Google is pushing an alternative, One Pass, it charges 10 % and share the information of users. For now, the readers of these apps are bonus for publishers-

The new new media Time is on all platforms –kindle, ipad, androids, web Some are only on tablets such as the Daily, some are only on web and tablets, dipnottv

Videos Video has become an essential element of the digital experience. Broadband access has made video distribution more feasible. But persuading users to watch news is not easy. Online video journalism:

Print vs Digital Consumption Estenson (CEO of CNN) says “going online is a private experience, versus watching in the living room. When people are online, they seem to gravitate to things that are more provocative than they would if they were in a room with their friends”. 2 minute stories – people’s attention span is short. There are hits and flops- crises times are hits for video watching online.

Pricing strategies Users do not appreciate to pay for their online access to news. Monthly, yearly subscriptions Other complex models such as New York Times’, users are limited to 20 stories a month… which led a blogger to write in his blog post “The New York Times is Delusional”.

Two arguments Should it be free or paid? Pay proponents say, high-quality journalism costs a great deal to produce, so users ought to pay to get it. Pay opponents say, paywalls cut sites off from “the conversation” online and will deprive them of the attention they need from blogs, aggregators and social media.
