LOOKING INSIDE CELLS CH 3 SEC 2

PURPOSE - STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANT AND ANIMALS CELL AND THEIR DIFFERENCES STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO NAME THE ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

WHAT IS INSIDE A CELL? KEY- THERE ARE EVEN SMALLER STRUCTURES INSIDE CELLS CALLED ORGANELLES ORGANELLES- CARRY OUT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS WITHIN THE CELL JUST LIKE OUR ORGANS- HEART, BRAIN, ETC http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cells/

ANIMAL CELL

CELL ORGANELLE TOUR CELL WALL- IS A RIGID LAYER OF NON-LIVING MATERIAL THAT SURROUNDS THE CELLS OF PLANTS KEY- THE CELL WALL HELPS PROTECT AND SUPPORT THE CELL.

PLANT CELL

CELL MEMBRANE KEY- ALL CELLS HAVE CELL MEMBRANES IN THEIR OUTER LAYERS KEY- THE CELL MEMBRANE CONTROLS WHAT SUBSTANCES COME INTO AND OUT OF A CELL KEY- FOR A CELL TO SURVIVE THE CELL MEMBRANE ALLOWS MATERIALS LIKE FOOD AND WATER PASS THROUGH THE MEMBRANE AND WASTE TO EXIT. EX- LIKE THE SCHOOL FENCE

CELL MEMBRANE

NUCLEUS NUCLEUS- ACTS AS THE CONTROL CENTER OF THE CELL KEY- THE NUCLEUS DIRECTS ALL OF THE CELLS ACTIVITIES EX- YOUR BRAIN KEY- THE NUCLEUS CONTAINS THE CELLS GENETIC MATERIAL

NUCLEUS

ORGANELLES IN THE CYTOPLASM CYTOPLASM- IS THE REGION BETWEEN THE CELL MEMBRANE AND THE NUCLEUS KEY- IT IS A CLEAR, THICK, GEL-LIKE FLUID.

CYTOPLASM KEY- IN THE CYTOPLASM ARE MANY ORGANELLES. EACH OF THESE CARRY OUT A SPECIFIC FUNCTION IN THE CELL.

ORGANELLES

ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTION MITOCHONDRIA- ROD SHAPED STRUCTURES THAT ARE KNOWN AS THE “POWERHOUSES'’ OF THE CELLS. KEY- RELEASE THE CELLS ENERGY

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM- MAZE OF PASSAGEWAYS THAT HELP FORM PROTEINS AND CARRY MATERIALS THROUGHOUT THE CELL

RIBOSOMES- PRODUCE PROTEINS ON THE WALLS OF THE E. R RIBOSOMES- PRODUCE PROTEINS ON THE WALLS OF THE E.R. AND IN THE CYTOPLASM

ORGANELLES CONT’D GOLGI BODIES- CELLS MAIL ROOM. THEY PACKAGE AND DISTRIBUTE MATERIALS THROUGHOUT THE CELL AND THEY RELEASE WASTE.

CHLOROPLAST- FOUND IN PLANT CELLS ONLY CHLOROPLAST- FOUND IN PLANT CELLS ONLY. CAPTURE ENERGY FROM SUNLIGHT AND MAKE FOOD GREEN LEAVES

VACUOLES- STORAGE AREA FOR CELLS VACUOLES- STORAGE AREA FOR CELLS. THEY STORE FOOD AND OTHER MATERIALS NEEDED BY THE CELL. MOST PLANT CELLS HAVE ONE LARGE VACUOLE FOR WATER.

ORGANELLES CONT’D LYSOSOMES- ARE SMALL ROUND STRUCTURES CONTAINING CHEMICALS THAT BREAK DOWN CERTAIN MATERIALS INTO SMALLER ONES. CELLS CLEANUP CREW.

CELL DIVERSITY KEY-CELLS COME IN MANY SHAPES AND SIZES DEPENDENT ON THEIR FUNCTION. http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cellstructures/ http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=248477
