1 Looking Inside Cells

2 Organelles Cells have within them structures which carry out specific functions within the cell. Just as our heart, stomach, lungs, etc. have different functions within our body.

3 Entering the Cell Materials have a hard time passing through a cell
They have to go through the Cell Membrane in an animal cell and Cell Wall/Cell Membrane in a plant cell Cell Wall: plant only, easily allows water and oxygen to pass through Cell Membrane: controls what substances enter and leave the cell. Prevents harmful materials from getting into the cell but does get rid of the harmful materials a cell makes as waste.

4 On to the Nucleus Nucleus is the control center of the cell. Contains the genetic materials needed to tell the cell how to function which is the chromatin. The Nuclear Envelope acts like the cell membrane and only allows certain materials to pass through to the nucleus. Nucleolus: where ribosomes are made

5 Organelles Cytoplasm: gel-like area where the organelles are located
Between the cell membrane and the nucleus

6 Organelles Mitochondria: powerhouse of the cell because they convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its function.

7 Organelles Endoplasmic Reticulum: a maze of passageways which carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another. The proteins come from the ribosomes.

8 Organelles Ribosomes: attached to some of the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum others float in the cytoplasm. Main job is to produce proteins that get released and transferred in the endoplasmic reticulum to other parts of the cell.

9 Organelles Golgi Bodies: receive proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell. They also release materials outside the cell.

10 Organelles Chloroplasts: In plants and a few other organisms!
They capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell. Contains chlorophyll which make plants green.

11 Organelles Vacuoles: Large water filled sac. Storages areas of cells.
Store food and other materials needed by cells and can also store waste products. Plants have a large vacuole whereas some animals may not even have one or if they do they are much smaller than plant vacuoles.

12 Organelles Lysosomes: small, round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials in the cell. They can also break down old cell parts and release the substances so they can be used again. They are the clean up crew.
