{ Deuteronomy Second Go Around

 17:18 From two Greek words,  “deuterus” meaning second, and  “nomos” meaning law, or  1:1 The original Hebrew name was  “devarim” meaning words 1:1  “these be the words” Deuteronomy Second Go Around

 What ways could this title be understood?  Moses was giving a 2 nd law, or  Moses was giving law a second time  1:6,18, 4:10-14, Moses repeats the covenant and Law given on Mt. Horeb. Get It Straight

  Some of Christ's most important quotations from the Old Testament were directly from the book of Deuteronomy. He uses the authoritative expression, It is written," as He quotes from Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:13, 16, on two important occasions (Matthew 4:4, 7 and 10). So, again, Matthew 22:24, compared with Deuteronomy 25:5. So again, Matthew 19:7-8; Mark 10:3-4; John 5: Again in Acts, Peter quotes from this book (3:22-23); Stephen also (7:37); and Paul (Romans 10:19; 12:19; Galatians 3:10).   (The Christ in the Bible Commentary, A. B. Simpson)   Know this book it is a door of understanding! Keep it in the back of your mind

 Exactly who was Moses speaking to?  1:1-3 “children of Israel”.  When?  1:3 The 40 th year before they enter to possess the land promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Most importantly who else?  1:8 Their descendants! (these whom he is addressing) Second Go Around

 Why do you think God thought it necessary for Moses to repeat the “words”?  Since the giving of the Law The whole generation of adults had perished in the wilderness. AND?  These people had shown the weakness of faith to be led into sin, such as with Balaam and Balak. Why the need?

 Too often we look at the generation that falls in the wilderness and the generastion that goes into the Promised Land as the closing of one door and the opening of another. They are not, they were the development of a people that shared experiences and the consiquences of life as Gods chosen people. V:9-15 V:9-15 Why The Need

 Four addresses by Moses  1-4 How did you get here.  5-26 Israel's Laws  Israel’s Future  Israel’s Covenant with God  Moses’ Final words What is in it for the people ?

Only the Shadow Knows

 What is the time of Moses’s address?  V:3 - The 40 th year 11 month on the 1 st day.  Num. 33:38 Aarons death 40 th year 5 th month 1 st. Day.  V:2 What information does Moses reveal that should have an impact on the people.  From Mt. Horeb to Kadesh Barnea was an 11 day journey.  How long had it taken them to get there?  V:3, 2:14 40 years! HINT: why so long? SIN Duet. 1-3 How You Got Here!

 1:6-8 Departure from Horeb to the Promised Land.  1:9-18 the people are a burden to lead so help is instituted to judge their “V:12” burden and strife.  1:19-25 The people face a crisis armed with weak faith. ( burden and strife)  1:26-28 The Compromise of Faith  1:29-33 Rebellion Duet.1-3 How You Got Here!

 1:34-40 God Rejects Them and Moses  1:41-44 Remorseful but still reckless  1: years in 2 verses, rejected by God. Due. 1-3How You Got Here!

 In this chapter Moses references four things God did that are one of the focuses of Moses address, Gods actions are an example of what he expects from His people. What were they?  2:5,2:9,2:14 and 2:19 ( (Gen.19:37-38)(Num.14:30-35).  1:26 God expects them to keep their covenants with Him. As he keeps his promises to others.  Why had so many fallen in the desert?  Lack of obedience, failure of a covenant! 2:1-37 What Have We Learned
