Making use of Basic Skill Assessment Data Student Development Planning, Program Review & Assessment Retreat August 3, 2012 Institutional Research

Example SLO Students will value the role of academic planning and course selection as part of their academic goals. Students will make informed course selections based on assessments. Example PLO Advisors will be informed by the performance of past students to guide current students into courses for which they are most likely to succeed.

Student Placed into Math & English Basic Skills Courses The success of students placing into both math and English basic skills courses was evaluated to see if students who start taking Math and English at the same time are more or less successful than those taking them one at a time (Math then English or English then Math).

Method Sample (n=1,478) included new students admitted fall 2006 through fall 2011 who placed into both English and Math Basic Skills courses. Excludes concurrent enrollment students. Students success was tracked during their first semester depending on whether they took basic skills math, English or both.

Making Use of Assessment Data How could you use these results? How could you reevaluate to determine PLO or SLO progress?
