Course Logistics The course will be managed through LMS Web modules and teletraining sessions will each have a student guide that is linked to LMS and also to the web page. Access these materials through the web at: and:

SHyMet Intern Objectives 1.Interpret satellite data and derived products especially: a. Characteristics of the image and derived products b. Strengths and limitations of the image and derived products c. Operational applications of the image and derived products

SHyMet Intern Objectives 2.Interpret various large- and small- scale cloud (and moisture) patterns in satellite imagery and their corresponding meteorological conditions. 3.Use satellite observations to supplement or complement other observation systems (data integration).

Competencies 1.Apply remote sensing principles to interpret cloud and clear regions in visible and infrared satellite images. 2.Identify land and ocean features in satellite images. 3.Identify cloud and precipitation systems in a satellite images.

Competencies 4.Compare and interpret satellite images at different wavelengths. Describe what enhanced features are apparent using these different images/wavelengths. 5.Describe principles behind satellite derived wind products and use to interpret winds from satellite observations. Identify inherent limitations in GOES satellite observations.

Competencies 6.Use satellite imagery in combination with surface and upper air observations, NWP models and radar to enhance both the forecast and warning processes.

SHyMet Intern Topics 1.Understanding satellite imagery as observation A.Orientation (this session) B.A Brief Overview of GOES: operations, channels, and schedules (web module) C.Satellite Meteorology: GOES Channel Selection (web module) D.Polar Satellite Products for the Operational Forecaster, Module 1: POES Introduction and Background (web module) E.Sounder (teletraining)

SHyMet Intern Topics 2.Applications and case examples A.Satellite winds (teletraining) B.Cyclogenesis (teletraining) C.Severe weather (teletraining) D.Tropical (web module)
