In the fight-or-flight response, your body provides you with the energy, reflexes, and strength you may need to respond to a stressor. It releases epinephrine, a hormone your body releases in times of stress. Positive Stress Stress that energizes you and helps you reach a goal is called eustress. Negative Stress Stress that makes you sick or keeps you from reaching a goal is called distress. The General Adaptation Syndrome describes three stages in the relationship between stress and disease: 1. Alarm Stage ◦ The body and mind become very alert in response to stressors. 2. Resistance Stage ◦ The body becomes more resistant to disease and injury. 3. Exhaustion Stage ◦ Extreme exhaustion sets in. Staying physically healthy can help you avoid stress- related illness. Some of the same things you can do for your physical health also relieve stress: Exercise regularly Exercise relieves tension – 60 minutes each day Get enough rest You should get 8-10 hours of sleep a night Eat right Nutritious foods help your immune system function properly. Deep breathing brings more oxygen to all parts of your body, and has a calming effect. To practice deep breathing find a comfortable place to sit or laydown. Close your eyes and concentrate only on your breathing. Inhale slowly until lungs cannot hold anymore air, then exhale slowly. Resiliency is the ability to recover from illness, hardship, depression, adversity, and other stressors. Many resilient people get strength from their assets. An asset is a skill or resource that can help you reach a goal. © 2015 NorthsideISD (San Antonio, TX)
