Writing Captions “Looking at a photo without a caption is like watching television without any sound.”

Write a caption for the picture

Bethany Hamilton paid a visit to fellow shark attack victim, Zac Golebiowski as he limped back on to the beach for the first time since his attack. Zac lost his right leg and a chunk of his left calf to a shark on December 2.

Math teacher Charlotte Smith explains to sophomore John Jenkins how to use a graphing calculator. The calculator was one of 150 obtained through a grant from the campus Shared Decision- Making Committee. “Calculators must be replaced periodically as technology improves in order for our students to have the best experience possible,” Ellzey said.

After a photo is taken… Answer the following questions –Who is in the picture? –What event or action is going on? –When did it happen? –Why were these people doing whatever they were doing?

Tell the story Write in complete sentences; avoid fragments. Vary writing style. Ex. Name first, event first, score first…etc.

Prepositions What is a preposition? “Anywhere a cat can go”

Avoid Prepositions: ex. “before” “on” “after” Beginning with “a”, “an”, and “the Using words that end in “ing” Editorializing…leave your opinion out. –Enjoy, excellent, intensely, diligently…etc.

Be Specific Captions are FACTS Supply concrete details –Be accurate –Be exact.

Sports Captions Sports captions- –Supply scores and information directly related to the action displayed in the photo Name opposing players if possible. –If numbers are shown on jerseys, try to identify them.

Tense Write the FIRST sentence in present tense. Write any sentences after in past tense. Quotes from one of the subjects pictured are optional.

Be specific… Don’t tell the obvious –If the photo is of a principal talking on the telephone, don’t write a caption that reads “Principal Morris talks on the telephone.” Who is he talking to, what are they talking about, when was this photo taken…etc. Fully identify everyone –Full (first and last) names

Continue the story… Use the picture to continue the story Make the caption a mini-news story –Use the picture and the caption to interest a reader.
