Monday, April 13 Welcome back! I hope you had a terrific weekend! Bellringer: – You have learned that President Hoover took a decidedly hands-off approach to addressing the Great Depression. Imagine you are a White House staffer for Hoover. Write a paragraph in which you defend Hoover’s position and purpose. If you are interested in writing corrections for the Ch test, please see me and make arrangements to stay after school one day this week.

The Great Depression Paying the price of the 1920s

"I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering.... The lesson should be constantly enforced that though the people support the Government the Government should not support the people." (1930) President Hoover’s belief in self-reliance would later affect his ideas about how to best solve the upcoming depression President and Mrs. Hoover

The election of 1932 Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York (D) challenges President Hoover in 1932 What were his campaign themes? What would he need to tell voters? FDR on the trail How successful was he? How did Americans respond to his message?

The election of 1932

Making a change Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected in a landslide Think about it: – How did the Election of FDR in 1932 change the economic condition of the country? – How would his approach differ from Hoover’s?

Federalism Consider: – What is the proper role for government in everyday life? – How does that role change during a crisis – manmade (like a political scandal or an affair), or otherwise (natural disaster, etc.)? – How should the federal and state governments share their powers? Americans are still asking these same questions, almost 225 years after the Constitution was written and 70 years after FDR.

Role of the federal government How did the role, size, and scope of the federal government change during the Great Depression? – What did Hoover believe government’s role to be, and how did that affect his reaction to the Depression? – What did Roosevelt believe government’s role to be, and how did that affect his reaction to the Depression?

Role of the federal government Please complete the chart comparing relevant quotes from Hoover and Roosevelt about the role of the federal government. Read each quote, put it “in other words,” and think about what that idea means for how the man would react to the Depression as president. Pay particular attention to how these quotes might help you answer the main question: – How did the role, size, and scope of the federal government change during the Great Depression?
