The Great Depression Paying the price of the 1920s

The Hundred Days Briefly describe each of the following federal acts during the Hundred Days. What were they designed to do? (Keep in mind what category each item falls into.) 7.National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) 8.Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (see p. 520-521 in your textbook)Tennessee Valley Authority 9.Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) 10.The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) 11.Public Works Administration (PWA) 12.Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA)

Controversy develops … Was everyone happy with the New Deal programs and outcomes? NO! It’s impossible to please everyone when people have different ideas about what government’s role should be in navigating through a crisis. As you might expect, the New Deal had its fair share of critics!

Criticism of FDR and the New Deal Why did people criticize President Roosevelt and the New Deal? Three main reasons: – They believed the federal government was spending too much money (what is deficit spending?) – They believed FDR was engaged in a power grab that concentrated too much legislative (lawmaking) power in the executive branch – They believed that overall, FDR was trying to exercise too much federal power over local issues

Federalism Americans are still having these same arguments, almost 225 years after the Constitution was written and 70 years after FDR had them: – What is the proper role for government in everyday life? – How does that role change during a crisis – manmade (like a political scandal or an affair), or otherwise (natural disaster, etc.)? – How should the federal and state governments share their powers?

Controversy develops … FDR’s leading critics: – Father Charles Coughlin Wanted the New Deal to guarantee income for financial stability – Huey Long Pitched “Share Our Wealth” plan – Dr. Francis Townsend Wanted pensions for the elderly – The American Liberty League Emphasized private property and individual freedom

Controversy develops … The Supreme Court ruled that parts of the New Deal were unconstitutional This meant that those parts could not be enforced (used) FDR decided that he needed more justices on the court to see things his way So he proposed expanding the court And, of course, he would nominate the new folks!

Controversy develops … Members of Congress, especially senators, FREAKED OUT, because they felt that FDR was overstepping the boundaries laid out for the president in the Constitution – “Stay on your side!” They eventually defeated the plan, which they called the “court packing scandal” But FDR’s reputation and his relationships with lawmakers were damaged

Controversy develops … What was the “court packing scandal”? What led to the “court packing scandal”? Why did FDR believe it was necessary?

‘Cinderella Man’ This movie is based on a true story. Complete the note guide as we watch this film about James J. Braddock, his family, and their experiences during the Great Depression.
