Do Now: 1. Take out the FDR’S NEW DEAL homework from yesterday- define New Deal and FDR 2. Copy the following vocabulary terms: Court Packing Plan: Roosevelt asked Congress to give him the power to appoint one new Supreme Court justice for every court judge who was older than age 70 and who had served for at least 10 years. Shecter Poultry Corp. v. United States: Supreme Court of the United States abolished the National Industrial Recovery Act a cornerstone of the New Deal. The court held that Congress had exceeded its authority by delegating too much legislative power to the president and industrial groups

3 FDR's New Deal Franklin D. Roosevelt became president during the heart of the Great Depression. Unemployment in 1933 was topping over 25% and there were no signs of improvement. FDR had been elected on the his promise of a New Deal to the American people, a program under which the government would begin to actively attack the problems of the depression. How would you try to solve these problems if you were FDR? While the successfulness of the New Deal programs in combating the Great Depression remains open for debate, there is little doubt that the relief programs offered during the first 100 days served to feed, house and employ millions of Americans who would have otherwise gone hungry or become homeless.

Roosevelt’s administration, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) were created as a way to provide jobs to those who were unemployed raise revenue for relief and recovery programs limit risks associated with savings and investments implement the new income tax amendment Much of the domestic legislation of the New Deal period was based on the idea that the federal government should favor big business over labor and farming assume some responsibility for the welfare of people own and operate the major industries of the country require local communities to be responsible for social welfare programs
