 All you need on your desk is something to write with.  You will have no more than 15 minutes for this quiz.  You either know it, or you don’t! POP QUIZ!

Agenda  Do Now  Transition sentences  Why do we need them?  Examples  Independent work  Exit Objective  Students will use words and phrases to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships between their arguments and evidence. AGENDA AND OBJECTIVE

TRANSITION SENTENCES

 Good transitions can connect paragraphs and turn disconnected writing into a unified whole.  Instead of treating paragraphs as separate ideas, transitions can help readers understand how paragraphs work together, reference one another, and build to a larger point.  The key to producing good transitions is highlighting connections between corresponding paragraphs.  By referencing in one paragraph the relevant material from previous ones, writers can develop important points for their readers. TRANSITION SENTENCES

TYPES OF TRANSITION SENTENCES

 Complex sentences: Tie the closing statement of the previous paragraph. Move from “old” information to “new” information.  It can be helpful to start off your sentences with words like after, although, as, while, when, until, before, because, if, or since.  B ridge sentences: indicates what came before and what comes next without multiple clauses and complex sentences.  It can be effective because it will be a stylistic change. These sentences are usually much more short, sweet, and to the point. COMPLEX AND BRIDGE SENTENCES – WRITE DOWN ON WORKSHEET

MOCK ESSAY – THINGS TO CONSIDER

 Remember the lens for organization!  If we look at the thesis statement for the mock essay, you’ll see that my first lens is plot.  Because I’ve already done The Hunger Games, I need to transition into how fear-filled events help Scout grow in To Kill a Mockingbird.  Look at the last sentence of the previous paragraph. If your last sentence is making a connection to the thesis (as it should), use that as a jumping off point to make a connection between the “old” topic and the “new.” THG TO TKAM: THINGS TO CONSIDER

Complex sentence example:  Because To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama before the Civil Rights movement, the often-harrowing circumstances of Scout Finch’s life and what she has to deal with inevitably affect her and make her grow up. Bridge sentence example:  Katniss Everdeen is not the only literary character to realize that fear can incite great change internally. EXAMPLES – WRITE DOWN ON YOUR WORKSHEET!

 For today, you must continue to work through your first THREE body paragraphs (one entire lens, three texts).  Work through finding your evidence, analyzing your quotes and tying all evidence back to your thesis. INDEPENDENT WORK Outlines with introduction, first three fully done body paragraphs, and conclusion are due Friday by Midnight to
