The weather: cold; warm/hot; wet; wind

Cold weather

Cold weather In Scandinavia, the chilly (1) days of autumn soon change to the cold days of winter. The first frosts (2) arrive and the roads become icy. Rain becomes sleet (3) and then snow, at first turning to slush (4) in the street, with severe blizzards (5) and snowdrifts (6) in the far north. Freezing (7) weather often continues in the far north until May or even June, when the ground starts to thaw (8) and the ice melt (9) again. 1 cold, but not extremely 2 thin white coat of ice on everything 3 frozen or partly frozen rain and snow mixed 4 dirty, brownish, half-melted snow 5 heavy snow blown by high winds 6 deep banks of snow against walls, etc. 7 extremely cold, with temperatures at or below the freezing point 8 change from hard, frozen state to more liquid 9 change from solid to liquid under heat

Warm/hot weather Stifling (hot, uncomfortable; you can hardly breathe) Humid (moist, damp air) Muggy (unpleasantly warm and extremely humid; makes you sweat) Scorching (burning heat)boiling (excessively hot) Sweltering (oppressive heat) Close (uncomfortably warm and stuffy) Mild (moderate; not severe or extreme, e.g., a mild winter) Note also: We had a heat wave last month. (a period of unusually hot weather)

Wet weather

This wet weather scale gets stronger from left to right Translate damp drizzle pour torrential rain flood Fall is usually chilly and damp with rain and drizzle. It was absolutely pouring. There was a real downpour. In the tropics there is often torrential rain, and the roads get flooded. This rain won’t last long; it’s only a shower. The storm damaged several houses. We got soaked in the thunderstorm. Hailstones battered the roof of our car. The sky’s overcast; I think it’s going to rain. We had drought last summer. It didn’t rain for six weeks. The air was misty after the light rain. It was so foggy that I could barely see ahead of me.

Wind There was a gentle breeze on the beach, just enough to cool us. It’s a blustery day; the gusts of wind will just blow the umbrella away. There’s been a gale warning; it would be crazy to go sailing. People boarded up their windows when they heard a hurricane was on the way.

Match each word with a word from the box stones drift storm warning rain wave pour thunder storm torrential drift down stones heat warning hail rain snow wave gale pour

What kinds of weather do you think caused the following to happen What kinds of weather do you think caused the following to happen? Write a sentence that could go before each of these. We had to sit in the shade if we went outdoors. I can hardly breathe; I wish it would rain to cool us down. Even the mail carrier had to use a boat to get around. They had to close the airport; it was three feet deep. We were able to sit in the garden in the middle of winter. The earth became rock-hard and a lot of plants died that summer. It blew the newspaper completely out of my hands. A row of big trees was uprooted like matchsticks. There was an awful heat wave last month. It’s muggy today. We had terrible floods. There was a blizzard that night. Do you remember how mild it was that year? There was a very bad drought. Suddenly there was a very strong gust of wind. After the gale, the damage was unbelievable.

What types of weather are bad and good for doing these things? Planting flowers in the garden Having an evening barbecue Going out in a small sailboat A day of sightseeing in a big city Camping out in a tent Looking at ships through binoculars Bad: dry, drought Good: mild Bad: cold, windy, wet Good: warm, mild Bad: gales, storm, wet Good: sunny, dry Bad: cold, wet, windy Good: clear, dry Bad: wet, windy, snowy Good: dry, no windy, warm Bad: fog, rain Good: sunny, dry

Describe the weather in your country or home region during different seasons of the year. Which season has the best weather? the worst? Example: Summer is the best season. It‘s warm and sunny, with cool breezes at night. In winter it is cold and damp … .
