Questions for the External Reviewers Inputs: Outreach efforts have led to increased SA participation among athletes and in particular departments. What more can be done to ensure that students across the College consider SA as an option? Budget: Beloit allocates $1.3 million for off-campus study tuition and related costs, a figure that does not change from year to year despite fluctuations in off-campus study enrollments. Average per student spending on study abroad (<$7,500 for study abroad, c. $7,900 if domestic off-campus study is included) is kept below the average tuition collected (c. $9,000) by using a mix of exchanges and other direct enrollment, and limiting enrollment in provider programs. How else might the College think about budgeting for off-campus study? Reflection/Integration : c. 50% of returned study abroad students participate in formal reflection/integration activities. Given the importance of reflection/integration for learning, are there additional, existing opportunities students can take advantage of to incorporate their study abroad into on-going learning? The value of alternatives to semester SA: Increasingly, faculty are taking small groups of students abroad as part of semester- long courses, in field schools, and for research. Risk management for these opportunities is facilitated by OIE, but for the most part, the design and assessment of the activities falls to the faculty members taking the students abroad. How might Beloit College assess the value of these activities for the students, the faculty members leading them, departments, and the larger institution? Faculty capacity building: Faculty development activities have strengthened study abroad at Beloit College by enabling faculty to understand the potential of study abroad and use their teaching and advising to prepare students for study abroad as well as help them integrate it into their studies post study abroad. Many of these activities were funded by foundation grants that have expired. What kind of funding opportunities might Beloit College pursue now in order to ensure that faculty development related to study abroad continues?
