5 Minute Check

Thursday, Oct 30 Lesson Powers and Exponents

Objective: To understand how to represent numbers using exponents.

Powers and Exponents A product of like factors can be written in exponential form using an exponent and a base.

Powers and Exponents The base is the number used as a factor.

Powers and Exponents The exponent tells how many times a base is used as a factor.

Powers and Exponents Numbers expressed using exponents are called powers. e.g. 100 is a power of 10 because it can be written as 10².

Powers and Exponents Numbers expressed using exponents are called powers. A perfect square is a number that is made by squaring a whole number. e.g. 100 is a perfect square because 10²=100

Powers and Exponents To write powers as products, determine the base and the exponent. e.g. The base of 10² is 10 and the exponent is 2. 10² is read ten squared. 10³ is read ten cubed.

Powers and Exponents A number that is “squared” represents a two dimensional shape.

Powers and Exponents A number that is “cubed” represents a three dimensional shape.

Powers and Exponents Write 6 · 6 · 6 using an exponent.

Powers and Exponents Write 6 · 6 · 6 using an exponent. 6 · 6 · 6 = 6³

Powers and Exponents Write 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 using an exponent. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 using an exponent. 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 = 4 ⁵

Powers and Exponents Write 7 · 7 · 7 · 7 using an exponent.

Powers and Exponents Write 7 · 7 · 7 · 7 using an exponent. 7 · 7 · 7 · 7 = 7 ⁴

Powers and Exponents Write 5² as an expression with the same factors.

Powers and Exponents Write 5² as an expression with the same factors. 5 · 5 What is the product?

Powers and Exponents Write 5² as an expression with the same factors. 5 · 5 = 25

Powers and Exponents Write 2 ⁴ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write 2 ⁴ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 = 16

Powers and Exponents Write ( )³ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write ( )³ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. · · =

Powers and Exponents Write 1.5² as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write 1.5² as an expression with the same factors and then find the product · 1.5 = x

Powers and Exponents Write 2.1² as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write 2.1² as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. 2.1 · 2.1 = x

Powers and Exponents Write 1.7³ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product.

Powers and Exponents Write 1.7³ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. 1.7 · 1.7 · 1.7 = x 1.7 x

Powers and Exponents Write 10 ⁵ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. Do this on your own.

Powers and Exponents Write 10 ⁵ as an expression with the same factors and then find the product. 10 · 10 · 10 · 10 · 10 = 100,000

Powers and Exponents What is the difference between an expression and an equation?

Powers and Exponents What is the difference between an expression and an equation? An equation has an equal sign. An expression has no equal sign, but has an operation.

Powers and Exponents Describe the pattern for the powers of 2.

Powers and Exponents Describe the pattern for the powers of 2. The next descending value is found by dividing by 2.

Powers and Exponents Describe the pattern for the powers of 4.

Powers and Exponents Describe the pattern for the powers of 4. The next descending value is found by dividing by 4.
