Tuesday, Nov 17 Lesson 5.4 Terminating and Repeating Decimals

Objective: To express positive and negative fractions as decimals.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals A Rational Number is any number that can be written as a fraction. That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator and the denominator are whole numbers.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals

Non-rational numbers are called irrational numbers. Do you know an irrational number? A number that cannot be expressed as a fraction?

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Non-rational numbers are called irrational numbers. Do you know an irrational number? Do you know an irrational number? π

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Every rational number can be written as either a terminating decimal or repeating decimal. Terminate means to end.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Every rational number can be written as either a terminating decimal or repeating decimal. Bar notation is a bar placed over the digit(s) that repeat. e.g. 0.54545454… = 0.54

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. How do you set this up as a math problem?

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 9 ) 5 or 5 ÷ 9 What is it as a decimal?

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 9 ) 5

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0 9 ) 5

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0. 9 ) 5.0

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0.5 9 ) 5.0 -45 5

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0.5 9 ) 5.00 -45 50

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0.55 9 ) 5.00 -45 50 -45 5 Do you see a pattern here?

Terminating and Repeating Decimals 5 Write 9 as a decimal. 0.55 9 ) 5.00 -45 50 -45 5 Do you see a pattern here? There will always be a 5 as a remainder. How would we write this as a decimal?

Terminating and Repeating Decimals

Decimals that do not repeat are called terminating decimals.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals There are two methods to convert a fraction to a decimal. The Proportion Method – which is easier, but only works sometimes. Long Division Method - More difficult, but works all the time.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals

When converting a mixed number or a negative integer to a fraction, detach the whole number or negative sign to divide, then re-attach.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals

Don’t forget to reattach the negative sign. X 25

Write -2.4 as a fraction. Do this on your own.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals

Frank made 14 out of 20 free throws this season. What is his free throw percentage? Do this on your own.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals X 5

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Write a fraction and an equivalent terminating decimal between 0.2 and 0.6.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Write a fraction and an equivalent terminating decimal between 0.2 and 0.6. Sample answer: 3 10 = 0.3

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Identify the decimal equivalent that does not have the same characteristics as the other 3.

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Identify the decimal equivalent that does not have the same characteristics as the other 3. 3 12 is a terminating decimal

Terminating and Repeating Decimals Agenda Notes Homework – Skills Practice 5.4 Due Wednesday, Nov 18 Show all work and circle all answers. Chapter 5 Test -Friday, Dec 4 Accum Rev 5 due on Dec 4
