Wednesday, Nov 5 Lesson 6.6.6 The Distributive Property

Objective: To use Distributive Property to rewrite algebraic expressions.

The Distributive Property A term can be a single number or variable or numbers and variables multiplied together and separated by addition or subtraction. e.g. 4x + 4 This expression has 2 terms.

The Distributive Property A coefficient is the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable. e.g. 4x + 4 In this expression there is only one term that has a variable and the coefficient is 4.

The Distributive Property A term without a variable is called a constant. e.g. 4x + 4 Constant.

The Distributive Property Like terms are terms that contain the same variable. Only like terms can be added or subtracted. e.g. 4x + 6 + 5x Like terms

The Distributive Property Distributive Property – To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis. e.g. 4 · (3 + 1) = 4 · 3 + 4 · 1= 12 + 4 = 16 e.g. 4 · (a + 1) = 4 · a + 4 · 1 or 4a + 4

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 )

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 ) 1 Can we write 4 3 as an expression?

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 ) 1 Remember that 4 3 = 4 + 3

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) Using the Distributive Property to Simplify Expressions Step 1 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the first term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 Step 1 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the first term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 Step 2 – Bring the operation inside the parenthesis across to the new expression.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 2 – Bring the operation inside the parenthesis across to the new expression.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 3 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the second term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 3 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the second term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 4 – Simplify and perform the operation, if possible.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + 36 + 3 39 Step 4 – Simplify and perform the operation, if possible. This is the work to be shown on tonight’s homework.

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 6 · 57 Do this on your own.

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 6 · 57 6 (50 + 7) 300 + 42 342

The Distributive Property Find 5 (2 ) Step 1 - ?

The Distributive Property Find 5 (2 ) 5 (2 + ) = 10 Ste p 2 - ?

The Distributive Property Find 5 (2 ) 5 (2 + ) = 10 + Ste p 3 - ?

The Distributive Property Find 5 (2 ) 5 (2 + ) = 10 + Ste p 4 - ?

The Distributive Property Find 5 (2 ) 5 (2 + ) = 10 + 10 + 3 13

The Distributive Property Find 12 (2 )

The Distributive Property Find 12 (2 ) 12 (2 + ) = 24 + 24 + 3 27

The Distributive Property Find 6 (3.5) 6 (3 +.5 ) = 18 + 3.0 21

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite. 2 (x + 3) Use the same steps as before. Step 1 - ?

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 2 (x + 3) 2 (x + 3) = 2 x Step 2 - ?

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 2 (x + 3) 2 (x + 3) = 2 x + Step 3- ?

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 2 (x + 3) 2 (x + 3) = 2 x + 6 Step 4- ?

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 2 (x + 3) 2 (x + 3) = 2 x + 6

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 8 (x + 4). Do this on your own.

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 8 (x + 4). 8 (x + 4) = 8 x + 32

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 5 (9 + r). Do this on your own.

The Distributive Property Use the Distributive Property to rewrite 5 (9 + r). 5 (9 + r) = 45+ 5 r

The Distributive Property Fran is making a pair of earrings and a bracelet for four friends. Each pair of earrings uses 4.5 cm of wire and each bracelet uses 13 cm. Using the Distributive Property, write equivalent expressions and then find how much total wire is needed. Do this on your own.

The Distributive Property Fran is making a pair of earrings and a bracelet for four friends. Each pair of earrings uses 4.5 cm of wire and each bracelet uses 13 cm. Using the Distributive Property, write equivalent expressions and then find how much total wire is needed. 4(4.5) + 4(13) and 4(4.5 + 13) 18 + 52 4(17.5) 70 cm 70 cm

The Distributive Property Factor 36x + 30 A friend rewrote the expression 5(x + 2) as 5x + 2. Explain to your friend the error and rewrite the expression correctly.

The Distributive Property Factor 36x + 30 A friend rewrote the expression 5(x + 2) as 5x + 2. Explain to your friend the error and rewrite the expression correctly. The friend did not multiply 5 and 2. 5(x + 2) = 5x + 10
