 Globalization means countries are increasingly interdependent  International alliances formed to enhance economic power, trade and security The UN acts as an umbrella organization with many agencies that set international policies and promote environmental, social well-being and security (peace keeping) - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Law of the Sea Convention

 The UN formed in 1945 (replaced The League of Nations)  Today there are 193 “member states”  There are 5 permanent members of the Security Council: ChinaRussia FranceUnited Kingdom USA

 The UN arguably has the largest role in global poverty reduction  Coordinates NGOs, IGOs, Govt’s, TNCs and locals  They have identified 3 strategies to reduce poverty: 1) Improve economic development 2) Create equitable distribution of wealth 3) Address problems of social development
