2. Didn’t the world already try this…?
The United Nations was created after WWII in order to prevent World Conflicts
But wait…Wasn’t there already an organization like this?
What was it?
What weaknesses did it have?
What could be done this time around to make this international organization actually capable of doing its job?

3. So What’s Different This Time?
UN actually has some teeth this time:
UN can vote to publically condemn aggressors
Use economic sanctions, urge members not to trade with aggressor
Respond militarily by sending in an armed force

4. …So it works? Not really…
Great potential, but U.N. frequently finds itself incapable of action due to the Security Council
Security Council is the body of the United Nations that is responsible for maintaining peace and security
15 members: 5 permanent, 10 rotating members
5 permanent members have the power to veto anything the U.N. may decide to do

What problems can you see arising from this arrangement?
What way could you get more done with the United Nations?

6. It’s not all bad!
U.N. responsible for the creation of:
UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) focusing on helping orphans/poor children & their mothers
WHO (World Health Organization) focusing on the eradication of diseases from the world (smallpox, AIDS, Ebola, malaria, tuberculosis)
IMF (International Monetary Fund) provides money to developing countries to upgrade infrastructure
