1 6.3 II. International organizations that promoted interdependency among states, communities, & individuals. By: Emily Jones & Ellie Krahn

2 Organizations for world peace. ● League of Nations, United Nations, and the International Criminal Court. ● The League of Nations was started by Woodrow Wilson the president of the United States in 1919. ○It remained a weak peace organization as the U.S refused to join. ● Later in 1945 a intergovernmental organization to promote world peace was made; known as the United Nations (UN). It replaced the ineffective League of Nations, and was created after World War II to prevent another world war. ○ Today the UN has in total 15 specialized agencies that carry out various functions. ● International Criminal Court (ICC) has control over prosecuting individuals for international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes.

3 Institutions that promoted free market economics. ● International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). ● The IMF is an organization that today consists of 188 countries (starting with 29 in 1944), working to secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world. ● The World Bank is a certain agency under the UN that makes loans to other countries for economic development and trade promotion. Its formal name is the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. o The world bank was founded by John Keynes and Harry White. ● The WTO was created in 1995 to bring order to international trade.

4 Humanitarian organizations, responding to crisis. ● UNICEF, Red Cross, Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders, and World Health Organization. ● UNICEF was established in December 1946 to meet the emergency needs of children in post-war Europe and China. The original name was the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, but in 1950, it broadened to the needs of children and women in developing countries. Shortening its name to the United nations Children’s fund. ● The World Food Programme (WFP) is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Yearly, the WFP reaches 90 million people with food assistance in 80 countries. In 2012, the WFP provided 53 percent of global food aid and distributed 3.5 million tons of food.

5 Regional trade agreements. ● European Union (EU), NAFTA, ASEAN, and Mercosur. ● The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the most comprehensive regional trade agreement ever negotiated by the United States. In 1996, the U.S. two-way trade with goods under NAFTA with Canada and Mexico increased by 44% since it started on January, 1st 1994. ● Association of Southeast Asian Nations is comprised of countries in southeast Asia to promote cultural, economic and political development. ASEAN was formed in 1967 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration.

6 Multi-national corporations. ● Royal dutch Shell, Coca-Cola, Nintendo, Nissan, Sony, etc. ● A multinational corporation or multinational enterprise is an organization that owns or controls productions of goods or services in one or more countries other than the home country. Its also referred as an international corporation, a "transnational corporation", or as a stateless corporation. ● They control the importing and exporting goods and services, make investments in foreign countries, and engage in contract manufacturing (giving foreign countries permission to produce their products).

7 Movements for the environment. ● Greenpeace, Green Belt in Kenya, and Earth Day. ● First celebrated April 22nd 1970 is Earth Day, a worldwide event held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. In recent years it has been celebrated in more than 192 countries. ● The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is an environmental organization that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods. It was founded by Professor Wangari Maathai in 1977 under the authority of the National Council of Women of Kenya (NCWK).
