Overview The Advanced Microwave Scanning radiometer – Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) is a passive microwave radiometer built by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and launched aboard Aqua on 4 May  Summary of Products  AMSR-E is designed to detect water in all its state phases in the environment and monitor the water processes that exert a strong influence on climate and weather.  Products generated include Brightness Temperatures, Rain Rate, Soil Moisture, Ocean Products, Snow Water Equivalent, Sea Ice  Redundancy Status  Two independent strings of equipment, one located at the National Space Science and Technology Center and the other at the Olin B. King Technology Hall. Both strings are located on the UAHuntsville campus and managed by SIPS personnel, but are connected to different networks. 2LANCE UWG Meeting College Park, MD

Overview (2)  User Support  GHRC User Services Office National Space Science and Technology Center  NRT versus Standard Product Comparison  Currently the LANCE Level-2A processing algorithm is one version behind SIPS standard products algorithm.  We are planning a two-pronged approach for the product comparisons:  a pixel-by-pixel comparison of each of the variables of interest in the Level-2 products, with differences binned and displayed on histograms.  for the Level-3 products, we are planning to create standard and NRT images plus a “difference image” for each of the variables of interest. 3LANCE UWG Meeting College Park, MD

Changes Since December 2009  In March 2010, the AMSR-E SIPS was tasked to transition the AMSR-E processing from the MODIS systems at GSFC to the SIPS in Huntsville. Work started in April.  First string of hardware began operations on September 27 th.  Redundant second string of equipment began operations on November 1st.  Both strings include authentication via ESDIS User Registration System, logging statistics into the ESDIS Metrics System, local and LANCE-central web pages, publicly accessible FTP servers and data access via web interfaces.  New Products Added: Level-3 daily land, ocean, sea ice and snow  Planned System Upgrades:  Integration of Remote Sensing System’s (RSS) new Level-2A algorithm, designed and implemented specifically for near real-time processing, is planned for December  Currently implementing subscription service  Currently analyzing system failover options  Coding of NRT versus standard product comparison is in progress 6LANCE UWG Meeting College Park, MD

Discussion: Potential Upgrades – LANCE AMSR-E  Is there a need for providing data in BUFR format?  SIPS discussed this with a user at the A-Train poster session (Sabatino Di Michele, ECMWF). He currently gets AMSR-E data in this format from the NOAA NRTPE system.  Is there an interest in incremental daily products?  Create partial daily products products several times per day from available L2 data. This would decrease data latency for Snow and Sea Ice products.  Is there an interest in subsetting AMSR-E data?  Currently providing this capability at the SIPS for AMSR-E science and validation teams. This capability is very popular for users seeking data and/or imagery in low bandwidth situations, e.g., during remote field campaign support.  Is there interest in running the AMSR-E data through the MODIS Rapid Response System?  Gallery of images, side-by-side with other element imagery, on the LANCE Central website. Candidate products: 89 GHz Tbs, Instantaneous Rain Rate, Surface Soil Moisture, Daily Sea Ice Extent (concentration). Candidate usage might be for first responders and disaster detection.  Is there a need for near real-time browse imagery?  Native swath projection or gridded? 7LANCE UWG Meeting College Park, MD
