Presentation transcript:

IPv6 Inactivity in Australia IPv6 Task Force Meeting APAN 21, Tokyo

First the bad news :-( No commercial ISP offering native IPv6 service Hardly any user demand either Even Universities aren’t rushing to deploy it AARNet been focused on rolling out the AARNet3 backbone (again)

Why? Australia is swimming in IPv4 address space –Early Internet adopter –Universities have /16 “Security consultants” sold customer on NAT as security device IPv6 support lacking at edge –DSLAM –Telephony It costs money

Is there good news? Department of Defence committed –But remember GOSIP IPv6 Summit in Canberra last year –So some people talking about it Apricot meeting in Perth At least one ISP interested –But busy with ADSL2+ rollout AARNet3 is dual stack –Looking to deploy IPv6 multicast too Some users of our broker service

Issues for AARNet Traffic visibility –Netflow support –Could be used for DDOS Some tools don’t support IPv6 yet We haven’t deployed our new name servers, web server etc

How can we move forward? Need to be aware of procurement cycles Encourage making IPv6 a requirement for new equipment tenders on par with IPv4 –But it can’t cost anything Juniper! Need to encourage equipment vendors to get their act together –PIX now has IPv6 but not OSPF3 –Need mainline ScreenOS build

No “Killer app” but … End users just expect “The Internet”, don’t care if it’s IPv4 or IPv6 They don’t care about better network facilities but … Access to something that is only accessible via IPv6 will make them demand IT departments “fix it” Perhaps make IT departments fear that they will get asked to “fix it”

Help! Any suggestions on how to drive deployment without government mandating it :)

Thank You Contact details: Mark Prior Chief Technology Officer AARNet
