What have you learnt about the Sahara Desert this term? Produce a mind map on the board to show what you have learnt so far.

Objectives All students will be able to describe the key features of the Sahara desert. Most students will be able to explain how these features form and how they are used by people. Some students will show a detailed knowledge and understanding of the human and physical geography of the Sahara desert. STRIPE: Self manager.

Sahara Case Study You will spend five lessons researching and producing a case study of the Sahara desert. You can work individually or in pairs. You could produce a mini-movie, a poster, a powerpoint presentation or a report. On the sixth lesson you will share your work with your class.

Sahara Case Study – Key Questions Where is the Sahara? Why has it formed here? What is the climate of the Sahara like? Why is it like this? What is a typical food web in the Sahara? How have specific plants and animals adapted to cope with the Saharan environment? What landforms can be found there? How did they form? How do indigenous people use the Sahara? What positive and negative impacts do they have? How do other people, such as tourists and multinational companies, use the Sahara? How could they use it in more sustainable ways? What challenges does the Sahara pose for different people? How can these challenges be dealt with? How is desertification affecting the Sahara? How can this be tackled?

Target setting Set your self a target at the start of each lesson – make this a SMART target S – specific M – measurable A – Achievable R – Realistic T - Timed

Reflection… What have you achieved so far? Have you achieved your target for the lesson? What do you need to do next? Homework (for two weeks) – Be ready to present your Sahara Case Study on _________

Sharing case studies You will take it in turns to share your case studies with your class. After each case study the class will assess it with two stars and a wish. The focus should be on the content of the work. Your teacher will reward good work with merits.

Have we achieved our objectives? All students will be able to describe the key features of the Sahara desert. Most students will be able to explain how these features form and how they are used by people. Some students will show a detailed knowledge and understanding of the human and physical geography of the Sahara desert. STRIPE: Self manager.
