2 Lesson Objectives By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to: Outline the role of government in creating the business climate – 4 main targets Identify 2 Local Economic Policies that may influence local businesses. Explain 2 positive and 2 negative changes that have occurred in Bradford in the last month. To discuss your own ideas for Bradford Present orally and visually to a specific audience You will also: – Work as a team to communicate your findings to a specific audience

3 What is Local Economic Policy? Local Economic Policy is what Bradford Metropolitan District Council and local councillors decide is going to effect Bradford ‘positively’. Some examples are the ‘City Park’, investment in Local Hospitals and schools and a financial commitment to ‘drug rehabilitation’. Support for business start-up (LEGI) and subsidies to help investment are other examples. Why does Local Government spend money on these issues? Where does it get its money from?

4 Some Questions Why do you think the government wants: Steady economic growth Full Employment Sustained Low Inflation A surplus on the balance of payments

5 Your Challenge is to produce a 3 minute Presentation in which you identify and explain the positive effects that you think local government policy will have on businesses. Audience: The report will be aimed at 14/15 year old students Rules: Within your report you must include information about the following: 1. Brainstorm on the likely effects on businesses – a mind-map 2. Two positive changes that have occurred in the last month 3. Two negative changes that have occurred in the last month 4. Identify what you would do as a Bradford Councillor to improve the Bradford Economy 5. You must present as a group with every member speaking Job roles Project Manager – responsible for the smooth running of the presentation and ensuring the presentation includes the rules Researcher/s – responsible for collecting the key facts for the reporter (whole group will be required to do research) IT and Resource manager – responsible for producing background slides and technical support Resources: You will have access to: Open Mind for your brainstorm A PowerPoint for creating the presentation Local business information Your brains! Time limit: 40mins Skills/ Disposition: Teamwork Communication Presenting information Product: A Presentation Product Criteria Bradford is Booming! Bradford’s economy OK Bradford is Bust!
