INSTINCTS SOME INSTINCTS = ___________________ & ___________________ OTHER INSTINCTS Are necessary for survival ___________________ & ___________________

SO WHAT DOES FREUD MEAN? WHERE DOES SEX COME IN? Freud used the term _______________________________ to refer not just to erotic sexuality but also to the desire for any form of pleasure. SEXUAL INSTINCTS are CRITICAL in the development of personality.

Course of Study Founded PSYCHOANALYSIS : the theory and therapy centered upon unconscious thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Human behavior is based upon unconscious instincts.

PSYCHOANALYSIS SETTING  Relaxed and comfy  Private  Limited Time THERAPIST  Sits out of sight  Counsels, gives advice

PSYCHOANALYSIS THE PATIENT  Allowed to speak freely and “open up” “THE COUCH”  Makes the patient feel comfortable and relaxed

THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY unconscious urges that seek expression : unconscious urges that seek expression  ____________________________: →Seeks immediate pleasure Avoid pain → Avoid pain Gratify instincts and desires → Gratify instincts and desires ♦ Replace discomfort with comfort

THE ID ARE YOU A NOW PERSON OR LATER PERSON?

RESULTS IN REFLEX ACTIONS  Immediate relief For example: Coughing FANTASIES  Wish fulfillment  Brief relief of unpleasantness

THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY : “the self”: conscious and preconscious (subconscious) Controls thinking and reasoning Defends against anxiety  Defense Mechanisms  (Denial, Repression, etc.)

Reality principle Ego keeps ID “in control” Delays satisfaction of desires until it can be done safely and effectively Delays satisfaction of desires until it can be done safely and effectively Id and Ego alone = selfish and antisocial personality

THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY : “Your Conscience” THE MORAL GUARDIAN  Parental and Societal Standards  Guides the ego  Compares ego to the EGO IDEAL

ID SUPEREGO Ideally, the ID, EGO, and SUPEREGO work in frickin’ harmony to satisfy the demands of the ID in a reasonable, moral manner

DOMINANT ID… Uncontrolled instincts Danger to society

DOMINANT SUPEREGO Overly critical Obsessive (OCD)

The Cat in the Hat Essay Paragraph 1: Explain the Id, Ego, and Superego and their relationships to each other. Paragraph 2: Choose 2 characters from the story and describe the progression of their personality throughout the story, according to the id, ego, and superego. Paragraph 3: Summarize your findings. Include whether or not you agree with Freud’s psychoanalytic view of personality.

DEFENSE MECHANISMS

WHAT ARE THEY?

#1 ________________________: when a person completely “forgets” a disturbing event. Example: Childhood abuse

#2 _____________________________: Protecting oneself from unpleasant reality by refusing to perceive it “It can’t happen to me!” “It wasn’t me! I didn’t do it!”

#3 __________________________: When a person transfers negative feelings on someone else; blaming others for your actions EXAMPLE: YOU made me fail!

#4 ______________________________: When a person acts the complete opposite of how they feel to avoid anxiety EXAMPLE: Congressman Mark Foley

#5 _____________________________: When people take out their feelings on things or people that are not involved in making them feel upset

#6 ___________________: Reverting to childlike behavior and defenses EXAMPLE: Temper Tantrum

#7 _____________________ Redirecting repressed motives or feelings into more socially acceptable forms.
