Today's Discussion Review of last class Group decision making technique & Team building 2UNIT III O & B

INFLUENCE OF GROUP IN AN ORGANIZATION filling in gaps in manager abilities Solving work problems Better coordination Channel of communication Restraint on managers Better relations Norms of behavior Satisfied workforce Developing future executives UNIT III O & B3

GROUP DECISION MAKING TECHNIQUE Interacting group Brainstorming Nominal group technique Electronic meeting Delphi technique UNIT III O & B4

INTERACTIVE GROUPS The most common form of group decision making takes place in interacting groups. In these groups, members meet face to face and rely on both verbal and non verbal interaction to communicate with each other. But interacting groups often censor themselves and pressure individual members toward conformity of opinion. Brain storming, the nominal group technique, and e meetings have been proposed as ways to reduce many of the problems inherent in the traditional interactive group UNIT III O & B5

BRAINSTORMING Brainstorming is meant to overcome pressures for conformity in the interacting group that retard the development of creating alternatives. It does thing by utilizing an idea generation process that specifically encourages any and all alternatives, while withholding any criticism of those alternatives UNIT III O & B6

NOMINAL GROUP TECHNIQUE The Nominal group technique restricts discussion or interpersonal communication during the decision making process, hence, the term nominal. Group members are all physically present as in a traditional committee meeting but the members operate independently specifically a problem is presented UNIT III O & B7

ELECTRONIC MEETING The most recent approach to group decision making blends the nominal group technique with sophisticated computer technology. It is called the computer assisted group or electronic meeting, once the technology is an take place, the concept is simple UNIT III O & B8

DELPHI TECHNIQUE This technique is modification of brainstorming technique, except that is involves obtaining the opinion of experts physically separated from each other and unknown to each other. Generally, the type of problems handled by this technique is not specific in nature or related to a particular situation given at a time. The process is more involved in predicting and assessing the impact on our society of future events in a given area for example, the delphi technique may be used to understand the problems that could be created in the event of a war and after UNIT III O & B9

TEAM BUILDING The process of working with a team to clarify its task and how team members can work together to achieve it. A strategy that can help groups to develop into a real team is “team building” UNIT III O & B10

PROCESS OF TEAM BUILDING Problem sensing Examining differences Giving and receiving feedback Developing interactive skills Follow up action UNIT III O & B11 “Coming together is a beginning Keeping together is progress; and Working together is success”

Problem sensing : at this stage generally most of the members come forward with their arguments as to what the real problems are Examining differences: the perception of people on an issue differs because of their differing backgrounds, such as their value systems, personality and attitudes UNIT III O & B12

Giving and receiving feedback The step of perceiving things and listening to each other may be relayed back to the members as there is a possibility that such processes may create tense situation in the group often, members report about the painful feelings that they have at the time of evaluation of their feelings UNIT III O & B13

Developing interactive skills the basic objective of this process is to increase the ability among the people as to how they should interact with others and engage in constructive and negative behaviors. Follow up action that is the final stage in team building. At this stage, the total team is convened to review that has been learned and to identify what the next step should be. Follow up action also overcoming the drawback grouped at the initial stages of team building UNIT III O & B14

GUIDELINES FOR TEAM BUILDING Emphasize common interest and values Use ceremonies and rituals Use symbols to develop identification with the group Encourage and facilitate social interaction Tell people about group activities and achievements Conduct process analysis session Conduct alignment session Increase incentive for mutual cooperation UNIT III O & B15
