Leadership Models, and Styles How will you lead?

Leadership Models  Generally speaking leadership models help us to understand what makes leaders act the way they do in certain situations  As a leader you never want to lock yourself into one type of behaviour within the model  Instead you should realize every situation calls for a different behaviour from you as a leader  Today we are going to analyze the Blake and Mouton Leadership Model  It includes the following 4 behaviours: Authoritarian, Team Leader, Country Club Leader, and Impoverished Leader  Generally speaking leadership models help us to understand what makes leaders act the way they do in certain situations  As a leader you never want to lock yourself into one type of behaviour within the model  Instead you should realize every situation calls for a different behaviour from you as a leader  Today we are going to analyze the Blake and Mouton Leadership Model  It includes the following 4 behaviours: Authoritarian, Team Leader, Country Club Leader, and Impoverished Leader

Blake and Mouton Model  Authoritarian  Want to get the job done whatever the cost  These leaders are generally hard on their workers/followers  No room for cooperation or collaboration  Strong on schedules, and people doing things they are told without debate  When things go wrong they focus on who is to blame rather than concentrate on exactly what is wrong  Authoritarian  Want to get the job done whatever the cost  These leaders are generally hard on their workers/followers  No room for cooperation or collaboration  Strong on schedules, and people doing things they are told without debate  When things go wrong they focus on who is to blame rather than concentrate on exactly what is wrong

Blake and Mouton Model  Team Leader  Leads by positive example  These leaders want their followers to reach their highest potential  They always are encouraging their followers  The try to strengthen relationships between members on the team  Team Leader  Leads by positive example  These leaders want their followers to reach their highest potential  They always are encouraging their followers  The try to strengthen relationships between members on the team

Blake and Mouton Model  Country Club  This leader uses mostly rewards to maintain discipline and achieve goals  These leaders have difficulty being tough on their followers  They often fear if they are tough on their followers it could jeopardize relationships with the team  Country Club  This leader uses mostly rewards to maintain discipline and achieve goals  These leaders have difficulty being tough on their followers  They often fear if they are tough on their followers it could jeopardize relationships with the team

Blake and Mouton Model  Impoverished Leader  These leaders give instructions and leave it up to the followers to deliver  They basically allow the team to do whatever they want which can often result in a power struggle among the followers  Impoverished Leader  These leaders give instructions and leave it up to the followers to deliver  They basically allow the team to do whatever they want which can often result in a power struggle among the followers

Leadership Styles  Ideally you will become a team leader in the future  Team leaders do not use just one style of leadership to make decisions for the groups they are in charge of  They will likely use all 3  Ideally you will become a team leader in the future  Team leaders do not use just one style of leadership to make decisions for the groups they are in charge of  They will likely use all 3

Leadership Style #1 Authoritarian (Autocratic)  Used when the leader tells the followers what and how they want something done without input from the team  This style is used when:  The leader has all the information to solve the problem  The team is short on time  The followers are well motivated  Some people think this this style includes yelling, using demeaning language, and threats. That is not authoritarian…it is simply unprofessional!  Used when the leader tells the followers what and how they want something done without input from the team  This style is used when:  The leader has all the information to solve the problem  The team is short on time  The followers are well motivated  Some people think this this style includes yelling, using demeaning language, and threats. Leadership Style #2 Participative (Democratic)  Used when the leader includes one or more of the followers in the decision making process on how and what should get done  The leader maintains the final decision, however this style empowers the followers to have input  Used when the leader has some of the information and when the followers have some of the information  This allows for a well thought out, and overall better decision  Used when the leader includes one or more of the followers in the decision making process on how and what should get done  The leader maintains the final decision, however this style empowers the followers to have input  Used when the leader has some of the information and when the followers have some of the information  This allows for a well thought out, and overall better decision

Leadership Style #3 Delegative (Free-Reign)  Used when the leader allows the followers to make the decision  The leader is still responsible for the decisions made  The is a great strategy when the followers are able to assess the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it  Leaders cannot do everything nor are they good at everything…  As a leader you must not be afraid to admit this and must be prepared to delegate tasks to people who are better at them than you!  Used when the leader allows the followers to make the decision  The leader is still responsible for the decisions made  The is a great strategy when the followers are able to assess the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it  Leaders cannot do everything nor are they good at everything…  As a leader you must not be afraid to admit this and must be prepared to delegate tasks to people who are better at them than you!

Using all 3 Leadership Styles  It can be done!  Example:  Telling your employees that a procedure is not working correctly and a new one must be established (authoritarian).  Asking for their ideas and input on creating a new procedure (participative).  Delegating tasks in order to implement the new procedure (delegative).  It can be done!  Example:  Telling your employees that a procedure is not working correctly and a new one must be established (authoritarian).  Asking for their ideas and input on creating a new procedure (participative).  Delegating tasks in order to implement the new procedure (delegative).
