LEADERSHIP

Activity: Survival Scenario Scenario: Your science department has been chosen to participate as a group on the game show Survivor. You will be dropped onto a deserted island. As a group you need to choose 10 things to take with you.

For Each Group Choose:  Leader  Scribe/Observer-be willing to describe the group process and how consensus was achieved  Sceptic

Activity: Think/Pair/Share:  About a group that worked well  Why  About a group that did not work well  Why

Qualities of a Leader What are qualities you would expect to see in an affective leader?

Qualities of a Leader  Vision means to have a clear, vivid picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on what success looks like and how to achieve it.  Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values.  Dedication means spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand  Magnanimity means giving credit where it is due.  Humility means being able torecognize that you are no better or worse than other members of the team

 Openness means being able to listen to new ideas, even if they do not conform to the usual way of thinking.  Creativity is the ability to think differently, to get outside of the box that constrains solutions  Fairness means dealing with others consistently and justly.  Assertiveness is the ability to clearly state what one expects so that there will be no misunderstandings.  A sense of humor is vital to relieve tension and boredom, as well as to defuse hostility.relieve tensiondefuse hostility

TYPES OF LEADERS  Authoritarian or autocratic  Participative or democratic  Delegative or Free Reign

Authoritarian (autocratic)  I want you to...  Tell their teachers what they want done and how they want it accomplished.  The authoritarian style should normally only be used on rare occasions. Eg.

Participative (democratic)  Let's work together to solve this...  This style involves the leader including one or more teachers in the decision making process (determining what to do and how to do it). However, the leader maintains the final decision making authority.  This is normally used when you have part of the information, and your teachers have other parts. Note that a leader is not expected to know everything  Eg.

Delegative (free reign)  You take care of the problem while I go...  the leader allows the teachers to make the decisions. However, the leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made.  This is used when teachers are able to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. You cannot do everything! You must set priorities and delegate certain tasks. Eg.

A good leader uses all three styles Eg. A particular assignment is not working. How can it be improved and designing a new one. Telling your teachers that a procedure is not working correctly and a new one must be established (authoritarian). Asking for their ideas and input on creating a new procedure (participative). Delegating tasks in order to implement the new procedure (delegative).

What Type of Leader Are You? Activity: Leadership quiz- on wiki site

Leadership Scenarios Activity:  Divide into 4 groups  Read the Scenario on your sheet. Make suggestions as to how that scenario could be dealt with. – You have 5 minutes.  Move onto the next scenario and add to what is already there.  Continue until you have had a chance to add to all 4 scenarios  Share
