The National College – Supporting a self improving system Janet E Woods Lead Associate, North of England

2 The Task ….. “As the College’s work has demonstrated, it is schools themselves and our best school leaders who are ideally placed to drive improvement in other schools. I look to you to continue your work in supporting them.” “ I realise it will take time to establish a fully school led system… we must not lose sight of our focus on transforming the quality of education for every pupil through effective leadership in every school.” The Secretary of State in the National College remit letter, March 2011

3 By what means……. A key role for the National College is to support, over the next few years, the development of rigorously quality assured infrastructures for school improvement – led by schools for schools: Built around local context and what already exists, and to complement LA capacity – not to reinvent wheels; That explore the potential for work beyond traditional LA borders or regions; To support the development of sustainable and school led models, and therefore a shift in accountability

4 We are here to help….. L ead associates will be strategic points of contact for our work with Local Authorities, Department for Education, the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and other partner organisations within their region. They will: lead a team of associates who will deliver aspects of the College remit, focused on school improvement and leadership development; co-ordinate the work of the College with schools, academies to ensure regional coherence; work with leaders to help reduce under-performance, close attainment gaps, and develop self-improving systems across primary and secondary schools and academies
