WHO HAS THE RIGHT-OF-WAY?

Definition of right-of-way The right of one roadway user to go first or to cross in front of another; right-of-way must be yielded to others in many situations

What is the main purpose of right-of-way? Right-of-way rules are an aid to safe and smooth traffic flow. Not following proper right-of-way procedures is one of the main causes of traffic crashes.

Try to answer the following 3 questions!

Situation #1 Car A and Car B come to an intersection with no signs or signals. Both are coming from different directions. Who has the right-of-way?

Answer - The car on the right always has the right of way!

Situation #2 You approach a traffic light that is green and there are cars in the middle of the intersection. What should you do?

Answer - Always yield to cars that are in the intersection even if your light is green.

Situation #3 You approach a four way stop. Who has the right of way?

Answer-The car that reaches the four way stop first.

Three right-of-way situations you will encounter on the road!

When you are turning left an intersection, yield to all oncoming vehicles until you have the time and space to make a turn.

Pedestrians always have the right of way!

Always yield to emergency vehicles when they are flashing red or blue lights and their siren is on.

Review Never assume that you have the right-of-way. You do not have it until the other driver gives it to you. Drivers are human and humans make mistakes Right-of-way rules are the same from state to state.
