Defeats and Victories -Warhawks thought the war would be an easy win -U.S. was not prepared -General Hull led an attack on Canada from Detroit and was defeated back in Detroit -Multiple attempts to invade Canada failed -Opponents of the war called it “Mr. Madison’s War”

U.S. Naval Strength -Commander Oliver Hazard Perry commanded Lake Erie navy -Flagship was the USS Niagara -Used green wood to construct the ships -Defeated British forces in a large naval battle on Lake Erie -British were forced to retreat to Canada

Defeat of the Creeks -Andrew Jackson defeated a significant amount of Creek Indians -Gave the U.S. most of their land -Big victory for Jackson

Attack on the Capital -Britain fought war with France and U.S. -Why would that be complicated for GB? -British attack Washington D.C. -Burn the White House down -Dolly Madison (President Madison’s wife) saved GW’s portrait
