2 Causes of the War! Issues started under Jefferson, but would continue and come to war under Madison.

3 Violations of Neutrality Barbary Pirates attacked and stole cargo and held ships for ransom –U.S. warships sent to control area War Between Great Britain and France 1803 –Both sides did not want U.S. trading with the other –Both navies captured American ships –Britain stopped and searched American ships looking for British soldiers Impressment – force people to serve in the army or navy

5 Embargo Act Ban on trade with foreign countries Devastated New England shipping and merchants Increased American manufacturing to compensate for the loss of foreign goods Damaged Jefferson’s presidency

6 Non – Intercourse Act Banned trade only with Britain, France, and their colonies Tried to repair damage of Embargo Act Would trade with whoever stopped violating the Neutrality Act first! Not successful

7 Conflicts in the West Between Britain, Native Americans, and United States Native Americans in the Northwest Territory are still upset because they continue to lose land British are stepping in and arming the Indians so they can fight the American settlers Tecumseh becomes the leader of the Native Americans and attempts to unify the tribes.

9 Battle of Tippecanoe –G–Gov. Harrison upset over British helping the Indians and he reminds Tecumseh he signed the Peace Treaty of Greenville –T–Tecumseh continues to recruit new tribes –W–While he was recruiting Gov. Harrison’s militia attacked their camp (“Tippecanoe and Tyler too” campaign slogan for 1840 election) –U–U.S. defeated Tecumseh and his followers

10 War Hawks Young members of congress who called for war with Britain Mostly from south or west Leaders = Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun Wanted to stop the British influence among Native Americans, invade Canada, and stop trade restrictions.

14 Declaring War James Madison –President 1809-1817 –Inherited problem from Jefferson June 1 st 1812 Madison decided congress needed to vote on going to war –1 st time the U.S. had declared war Great Britain fought this war as an aside to their war with France

15 The War Navy Power –The U.S. had a smaller but very well trained navy –The U.S. was able to defeat British in one on one naval battles which boosted American morale

16 Invasion of Canada –1 st plan to attack because many citizens were actually born in America, but they did not take into consideration the large number of Native Americans to support the British –Americans wanted to invade Canada from Detroit, Niagara Falls, and Hudson River Valley All 3 attacks failed –Breaking Britain's control of Lake Erie American Commander Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British surrendering Lake Erie to American control

18 The Creek War –The Creek Indians in the south fought a war in 1813 with the American settlers who moved in and took their lands –The Creek attacked Fort Mims destroying the fort and killing 250 people –Andrew Jackson ( militia commander ) retaliated by attacking the Creeks and winning several battles –Treaty of Fort Jackson signed in 1814 ended the Creek War and forced the Creeks to give up millions of acres of land

21 –New Orleans British hoped to take New Orleans and control trade and shipping on the Mississippi River Andrew Jackson was the American military commander British were defeated as they marched across an open field Battle made Andrew Jackson a war hero It was the last major battle of the war technically fought after the peace treaty had been signed

23 Effects of the War Hartford Convention – A gathering of Federalists who opposed the war, but the war ended before they were able to do anything –Ending the power of the Federalist Party Treaty of Ghent –Signed December 24, 1814 –Ended the War of 1812 –Each nation returned its conquered territory

24 The War Produced… Increased patriotism in the United States Broke the power of the Native Americans Promoted American Manufacturing Increased sectionalism How did each of these come about???
