What’s your goal?

We the students of Ms. A’s 6 th grade class believe our education is important because our hard work will lead us to successful careers and lives. We promise to be respectful and focus by listening and participating in class. Our teacher will support us by being clear and equal so we can prepare for 7 th grade and beyond. To have this successful year we must believe in ourselves and cooperate with each other to develop a strong team and community.

S M A R T Specific: Be specific about your goal Measurable: Be able to measure the results Attainable: Is it within your reach? Reasonable or Realistic for you to be able to do this? Timeframe: Put a time limit to your goal

Specific Make it a power statement! Don’t be “wimpy” about it “Someday, I want to …” What exactly is it you want to do? My goal: Stop talking in class “I will stop distracting myself …” Measurable How much? How many? Can you measure it? “I will stop distracting myself by talking to my friends…”

Attainable Is it something you actually CAN do? Is it Reasonable or Realistic Are you Willing and Able to do it? You might be one or the other, but it takes BOTH Are there Conflicts? Off task conversation vs. Asking for help Timeframe (“I will stop distracting myself by talking in class to my friends by November”)

We went from writing a weak goal … “ Ya’ know, someday I’ll be a better listened.” To a POWERFUL goal… “ I will stop distracting myself by talking to my friends by November.”

For every week I follow my workout schedule, I will allow myself 1 hour of PS3 on weekends. When I keep my blurt card blank for a week, I will bring it home. Staying focused in class will result in better grades.
