I can… Identify goals and the types of goals Identify how to create and work towards meeting a goal Set goals for myself

What is a goal? A goal can be defined as the object of a person’s ambition or effort. It is something that you plan to achieve or something you strive for. Have you ever set a goal? What goals have you set in the past? If so, were you successful in achieving your goal? Have you ever been unsuccessful in meeting your goals?

There are two types of goals: Short Term Goals- Something you want to achieve soon (within the next few days, weeks, months) Long Term Goals- Something you intend to do but takes at least several months, years, or even a lifetime to achieve When you are thinking of setting short and long term goals, you need to consider a few things. There are good goals with clear focus and purpose and a plan, and there are not-so-good goals that have no direction or true achievement point.

As a student, you should always be trying to set good goals, and they way you can be sure of that is to make your goals S.M.A.R.T.

SMART Goals are… Specific Measurable Action-oriented Realistic Timely

SMART Goals are… Specific- State exactly what you are aiming at. Make sure that it is actually in your ability to achieve. Example- My goal is to buy an iPod.

SMART Goals are… Measurable- You must be able to measure your progress in some way. Time limits are a great way to do this! Example- My goal is to buy an iPod five months from today.

SMART Goals are… Action-oriented- Spell out exactly how you will achieve your goal Example- My goal is to buy an iPod five months from today. I will save $10 a month from my allowance.

SMART Goals are… Realistic- Your goals must be possible! They might be hard to attain but they can’t just be a dream. Example- My goal is to buy an iPod five months from today. I will save $10 per month from my allowance starting today which will leave me with $10 to do other things.

SMART Goals are… Timely- Give yourself enough time to achieve your goal, but make sure not to lose focus! Example- My goal is to buy an iPod five months from today. I will save $10 per month from my allowance starting today which will net $50 in five months. I have researched the price of iPods. The $50 will cover the cost.

Today we are going to set goals that we will plan to meet before the end of this school year. You will receive a star. On this star, you will create 2 academic goals and 2 personal goals. What is an academic goal? What are some goals you want to achieve with your classes? Let’s brain storm a list! Did you think of: Having all A’s Increasing your lowest class average by 10 points Studying 5 minutes every night

What is a personal goal? What do you want to achieve with your life? Let’s brainstorm a list! Did you think of: Going to college Your future career If you want to travel, and where Helping others On your star, write your 2 academic goals and your 2 personal goals. After writing your goals, flip your star over.

On the back of your star, write 2 possible road blocks that could keep you from achieving your academic goals. Even though we all face challenges, we can create strategies to overcome road blocks. How can you overcome these road blocks? What are some strategies that we have talked about earlier in the year that could help you meet your academic goals? Hint: Think about our discussions on study habits, organization, and stress management!

Beneath the road blocks on your star, write 2 strategies that you can use to overcome these challenges. Now cut out your stars. These will be displayed in your homeroom to remind you of the goals you have set for yourself! Remember that achieving your goals is all about attitude and determination!

Before we go, watch this short clip on reaching your goals one step at a time! One-Step-At-A-Time
