Space Linear perspective is a mathematical system for creating the illusion of space and distance on a flat surface. In other words it make three D things look more three D How do you make a drawing look realistic? How can you tell what things are far away ?

How do we create the illusion of space in an artwork? Overlapping (ones in front are closer) Size (bigger things are closer) Placement on the surface (higher appears farther) Detail (more detailed are closer) Colour ( farther away looks cooler) Value (darker is closer lighter is farther) Linear perspective (1, 2, or 3 point perspective)

One Point Linear Perspective To use linear perspective an artist must first imagine the picture surface as an "open window" through which to see the painted world. Straight lines are then drawn on the canvas to represent the horizon and "visual rays" connecting the viewer's eye to a point in the distance. The horizon line runs across the canvas at the eye level of the viewer. The horizon line is where the sky appears to meet the ground. The vanishing point should be located near the center of the horizon line. The vanishing point is where all parallel lines (orthogonals) that run towards the horizon line appear to come together like train tracks in the distance. Orthogonal lines are "visual rays" helping the viewer's eye to connect points around the edges of the canvas to the vanishing point. An artist uses them to align the edges of walls and paving stones. Step 3 For a building draw a square of rectangle Then LIGHTLY draw lines from the corners of the square to the vanishing point. (you will be erasing lines you don’t need)

Step 4 Draw a vertical line for the to make the far corner of the house (parallel to the other corner)

Step 6 Add detail

Step 7 Erase unnecessary lines Add other buildings, mountains, sky, people, animals…
