How it Works Super heated water in pressurized form from underground is piped to a geothermal generating station. Once the water is released from pressurized form it turns into steam. Then the steam turns the turbines, which turns the generator, producing electricity.

History The first human use of geothermal resources was 10,000 years ago in North America, with the settlement of the Paleo- Indians around hot springs. The first industrial use of Geothermal energy began near Pisa, Italy in the late 19 th century. Steam coming from natural vents and drilled holes to extract Boric acid.

Advantages One of the major advantages of geothermal energy is it is a renewable source of energy. Another advantage of geothermal energy is that it is eco-friendly so it doesn’t harm the environment in any way. It has virtually no greenhouse gases so it helps to reduce global warming and pollution. Geothermal energy is also much cheaper than fossil fuels.

Disadvantages Some disadvantages of geothermal energy are that geothermal power plants can only be built near hot rocks. Geothermal hot rocks may also run dry so they are no longer useable. Also if drilled improperly, harmful minerals and gases may be released from underground.

Other Uses Other uses for geothermal energy are heating greenhouses.

The picture is showing water being injected into hot rocks underground turning water into steam which rises through the production well which turns the turbines that turn the generator producing electricity.
