Geothermal Energy  Energy extracted from the Earth  Heat and steam inside the earth’s crust is used to produce electricity and heat buildings

How Do They Work?

Geothermal Energy  “geo” means Earth  “thermal” means Heat  Heat from the earth is used to provide steam  The steam is then used to turn turbines  These turbines are used to power generators which provide electricity

ADVANTAGES  Emissions are low  Renewable  Reduces reliance on imported oil  Reduces Pollution

DISADVANTAGES  Run out of steam  Hazardous gases might escape when drilling  You have to find the right kind of rocks to drill through

Where can we find it?  The entire U.S. (and most other areas of the world) are suitable for geothermal heat pumps.  Geothermal Energy can be found in Steam geysers, fumaroles, hot springs etc  The “ring of fire” is the pacific ocean

Which Country Uses the Most Geothermal Energy  China uses the most geothermal energy  Iceland produces the most geothermal electricity per capita  http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_geo_pow _use-energy-geothermal-power-use
