Health in the Past In the 1800’s and early 1900’s the leading cause of death was infectious disease. EG: Tuberculosis, polio, pneumonia, and the flu Dying from a disease was very common

Health Now Health problems today are caused by Lifestyle Diseases, which are disease caused partly by unhealthy behaviors, and partly by other factors. EG: Diabetes, heart diseases, cancer

Why the Change? Medical Advances Better Living Conditions Preventative Medicine Most diseases from years ago have a cure!!

Risk Factors Controllable You can do something about them. Weight management, smoking, physical activity level. Uncontrollable You cannot do anything about them. Age, gender, race, heredity.
