 This Power Point presentation has been made to walk you through the worksheet. It will answer a short number of the questions from your packet but also go through the key points of answering the other questions with examples.  The questions in this packet will be helpful for understanding the question on Thursday. This means that, by Thursday, you should be able to answer the questions on your own without the help of this PowerPoint.  Work with urgency! HOW THIS WORKS

3.11 PART A | POWER POINT

Kinetic Energy  Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.  Anything that is moving has kinetic energy.  Kinetic Energy usually has both:  Mass  Speed Potential Energy  Potential energy is stored energy.  Anything that can become lower has potential energy.  Potential Energy usually has both: Mass Height POTENTIAL AND KINETIC ENERGY Fill in the definition part of your chart.

Potential Energy  An airplane is flying through the air.  This has potential energy  The airplane is above the ground.  A skateboard is rolling on the ground.  This does not have potential energy.  The skateboard is on the ground and cannot go any lower. PE AND KE EXAMPLES Kinetic Energy An airplane is flying in through the air. This has kinetic energy.  The airplane is moving. A skateboard is rolling on the ground. This has kinetic energy.  The skateboard is moving.

Energy Transformation  An energy transformation is when energy changes from one type into another.  Potential energy transforms into kinetic energy when moving down.  Kinetic energy transforms into thermal energy when something hits the floor and during friction. Energy Transfer  An energy transfer is when energy moves from one place to another.  Thermal energy transfers to another object when two things touch (conduction).  Thermal energy transfers to objects far away through waves (radiation).  Thermal energy rises in liquids and gases when hot molecules rise (convection) ENERGY TRANSFORMATION VS. ENERGY TRANSFER Fill in the definition part of your chart.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed—which means that when we “lose” one type of energy, it either changes into a different type (energy transformation) or moves somewhere else (energy transfer). LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY Read this slide As the child moves down the hill, her potential energy transforms into kinetic energy. As friction slows her down, her kinetic energy transforms into thermal energy (and even sound energy). Energy is never destroyed.
