The Nature of Energy Chapter 5. What is Energy? When wind moves a leaf, or even a house, it causes a change. In this case, the change in the position.
Forms of Energy.  Forms of energy related to changes in matter are kinetic, potential, chemical, electromagnetic, electrical, and thermal.

Energy is said to be the ability to do work. That means the ability to make something happen. By “happen” it means to make things move or change condition.
Forms of Energy. Nature of Energy Energy is the ability to do work. If an object or organism does work, then it uses energy. Work is the use of a force.

Presentation transcript:

 Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.  It can change the temperature, shape, speed, or direction of an object

 Potential energy is stored energy.  Kinetic energy is energy in motion.

 Why is the bowling ball able to do work?  How should you throw the ball to do the maximum work on the pins?

 Chemical – The energy in chemical bonds that hold atoms together.  When chemical bonds are broken, chemical energy is released.  All matter has chemical energy. When you digest the pizza you eat, the pizza gives your body energy.

 Elastic – Energy that can be compressed or stretched.

 Electromagnetic – energy of light and other forms of radiation (radio, UV, X-ray); it travels in waves.  Thermal – Heat energy. The hotter the object, the faster its molecules are moving.

 Electrical- The energy of electric charges.  Sound- energy that causes air molecules to vibrate in waves.

Energy Transformation occurs when one form of energy is changed into another. Kinetic Energy (Turbines are spinning!) Electrical Energy

Electromagnetic (Light and UV) Energy

An energy transfer happens when the same form of energy is passed from one object to another. Kinetic Energy

Have you ever burned your mouth on sip of hot cocoa or tea? The thermal energy was transferred from the drink (hot) to your mouth (cold) by conduction. Ouch!
