CAMAS HIGH SCHOOL RSVP (RUNNING START VIRTUAL PROJECT) LESSON #12: YOUR GUIDE TO THE SENIOR PROJECT SPEECH

FIRST OFF, WHEN ARE SENIOR BOARDS? Boards are held during late starts (7:45-9:45) on the mornings of Tuesday, June 3, Wednesday, June 4 th & Thursday, June 5 th You will be assigned a specific time and classroom for your presentation Bridges & Downs will contact you with this information Arrive 20 minutes before your assigned time Go to designated check-in site and then wait outside your assigned classroom

OKAY, SO WHO IS ON A SENIOR BOARD? Boards are made up of community members and CHS teachers Expect to be giving your speech to a board of 5-7 people Board members review your Senior Project Portfolios ahead of time A high-quality Senior Project Portfolio makes a great first impression on your board

WHAT WILL YOUR BOARD BE EXPECTING OF YOU?

READ PAGE 35 IN THE SENIOR PROJECT HANDBOOK BOARD PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS

HOW WILL YOUR BOARD GRADE YOU?? Each board member will fill out a separate grading rubric for your speech Board members are not allowed to discuss the grades, even among themselves If a majority of board members mark you as “developing” in the same category you will have to redo your speech

READ PAGE 36 IN THE SENIOR PROJECT HANDBOOK BOARDS PRESENTATION RUBRIC

A WORD ABOUT TIME LIMITS… One board member is designated as the time keeper The time they record is honored by the entire board This means if you blow your time limit you will automatically have to redo your speech since all board members will have to record a “developing” in the time column of the rubric There is no rule against keeping time for yourself. A stopwatch at the podium can save you a lot of stress!

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO ENSURE SUCCESS?

READ PAGES IN THE SENIOR PROJECT HANDBOOK ADVICE FOR BOARDS PREPARATION

LET’S FOCUS ON YOUR INTRO… Grab the attention of your board while being pertinent to your topic. For a hook: a quotation, fact, reading, dramatic, joke, survey or other audience participation, demonstration, or question It could discuss your general interest/background in the topic of your project, how you decided to do this project, or what your vision of this project was. Thesis: Make a clear, general point about what you did and learned. Pause after your thesis before you start the body of your speech. It should be no longer than 60 seconds. Write your introduction word for word and memorize it for a confident start.

THE ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS LESSON… Write out your intro, word for word. Practice reading it aloud and time yourself to make sure that it is in the second range. Upload it to your drop box for this lesson. Also upload it to the Class Discussion: April Senior Project Speech Intro by 4/28. Review and give feedback on two of your classmates’ intros by 4/30. Please be very specific with your suggestions.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE FINE PRINT… Successful completion of an approved Senior Project is required to earn a Camas High School diploma CHS has strict requirements and standards for the Senior Project Failure to complete the RSVP Senior Project will jeopardize your on-time graduation
