1760 More Europeans arrive in the colonies. By 1770,more than 2 million people lived and worked in Great Britain’s 13 North America colonies. Colonists from all Europe were welcome in the middle colonies. Europeans who settled in the Middle Colonies included: Dutch, German, Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, Swedish and English and English immigrants.

1775 Philadelphia is the largest colonial city.

The Colonial Economies Agriculture - In the early 1700s agriculture was the way of life. Even for New England which has rocky soil, most made enough food for their family and to sell. Industry - The colonies started several industries to compete with the English. Shipbuilding was one of them. This became important in New England where money for fishing boats and merchant ships were high. Free Enterprise – They got Free Enterprise by building there own ships.By 1741 New England had more than 800 fishing boats.

Colonial Governments Assembly In 1619 the first assemble of Virginia took place in the house of burgesses. Only men who owned property could vote. The assemblies decide how much tax money would be spent and even wrote legislation. Legislation The laws approved in the assemblies had to be approved in the British government. Some governors saw it that the colony obeyed British laws. Delegates Most members of the assembly were wealthy landowners, lawyers, or merchants. They were often elected to office because voters believed these men had time, and education for public office.
