Debbie Simpson CEO Institute For Continuous Improvement In Public Services

About us Our charitable purpose : To embed continuous improvement (CI) in the delivery of public services through education Directors from public sector and academia 2000 members worldwide from 280 organizations Supported by senior officials including Sir Francis Maude

There are different types of change, CI is the one in which all employees should engage 1.Continuous improvement is small incremental change within defined boundaries 2.Change is a planned piece of work to address a known & defined issue 3.Transformation fundamentally alters the way things are done

Our activities Provision of resources - A one stop shop Networks & events – CI week and conference Established standards of CI practice Recognition of; Training courses – Approved provider scheme Organisational success – Annual awards Individual competency – Professional membership Research

The need to work effectively is not just a concern for today Demand will grow and change as will the opportunities to meet those demands differently.

Infrastructures aligned to enable CI

The importance of people Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ― Margaret Mead Margaret Mead “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” ― Albert EinsteinAlbert Einstein “Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” ― Barack ObamaBarack Obama

Many incremental changes can result in something great

Key questions for all What is our customer need / our purpose? How do we work together to deliver as efficiently and effectively as possible? How well are we doing? What are our challenges ? What opportunities and threats are there in the wider operating environment?

Empowering employees What level of changes can employees make ? How do you balance this with risk management? What does this mean in terms of reporting structures? What does this mean in terms of leadership and management?

Perceptions on leadership CI seen as a route to financial savings as opposed to long term viability Short term focus Concern about personal impact Lack of understanding about CI

The British Library - planning for success Focus on the customer and tailor services to suit Have a passion for reducing waste and non value adding activity Give everyone a voice to make change happen

University of York successes E-assignments - reduced processing time from 84hrs to 15.5 Start of term IT - process reduced queries by 1000 with 98% customer satisfaction Electronic allocation of learning modules – increased transparency

CI is not a science or the domain of experts CI is a natural instinct ; something we practice in our personal lives without thinking, in order to do things faster, cheaper, quicker, more effectively.

Creating a workplace conducive to CI Provide clear direction and purpose Understand individual fit within the whole Provide insight to inform opportunities Provide support Create space to think Celebrate success Learn from failure and success

A recipe for success Visionary leadership + Engaged employees + Strategic change projects + Continuous improvement = Organisations that deliver for today and are prepared for the future

A final thought ….. Apple inc. “Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules & have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them but the only thing you can't do is ignore them, because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

Thank you
