Scheme for the Award of Honours (SAH) This document defines what you have to do to get a degree It explains the structure of the degree It explains how to change degrees It explains the procedures used if something goes wrong If we change this we will issue you with a new version.

SAH key points Each module has an SME value (24 hours teaching) Modules organised into 5 levels (different weighting) Each degree has a set of core modules (accreditation) In year 1 a student takes between SME End of Year mark calculated on “best” 14 SME year 1 and 2, and year 3 BSc End of Year mark calculated on “best” 18 SME in year 3 and 4 for MSci Failed core modules always count Passing Year 1 You must pass 12 SMEs to qualify for Year 2 You must pass (at 60%), or exemption, all level 1 modules Year abroad students need > 65% overall to qualify SME = Single module equivalent

To graduate with an MSci degree you need to: Pass at least 60 SME over 4 years Take all of the core modules Pass at least 18 SME at levels 5 & 7 Pass at least 30 SME at levels 4,5,6 & 7

To graduate with a BSc degree you need to: Pass at least 36 SME Take all of the core modules Pass at least 10 SME at levels 4 or 5

Some Key Dates Registration for January exams are confirmed on Monday 3 December 2007 Registration for April exams are confirmed on Monday 3 March 2008 Registration for Summer term exams are confirmed on Thursday 8 May 2008 If you are registered and decide (after the above dates) not to take the exam – you will get a zero on your transcript.

Degree pathways Degree is flexible (but most flexible in later years) Core modules different for each degree We have pathway guidelines on the intranet Pathways are more important in years 2 to 4 Environmental Geoscience and Petroleum Geoscience students follow the relevant Geology pathway in Year 1

Level 1 Modules Maths (1.01) and (1.03) Chemistry (1.02) Physics (1.04) Geology: stratigraphy and life (1.05) Geology: rocks and minerals (1.06) If you have an A level (or equivalent) you will be exempt from taking these modules. Everyone else must take them. Choosing your modules Year 1 take modules at Level 1 & 2 (can take 1 or 2 at Level 3) ‘Clashing’ modules are not normally allowed All students take 2.15, projects and tutorials –Everyone has been allocated to a group –Each group meets with a different member of staff once every two weeks during term –Work is prepared in advance of the tutorial –Tutors tell you where to meet, and when (normally Mon 17.00) –First year project is submitted towards the end of the spring term
