Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Disabilities The Disability Perspective

Title II of the ADA requirements apply to state and local governments as well as those provided through third parties, such as the American Red Cross and private nonprofit organizations. In the area of Emergency Preparedness, this includes advance planning for: An emergencies and disasters plan Testing of preparedness such as Mass Casualty Exercises and staging simulations Notification systems to alert the public Community evacuation and transportation Emergency shelter programs Temporary lodging and housing Social services & disaster related benefits programs Emergency Medical Services Relocation programs Transition and transportation back to the community Emergency Disaster Recovery programs

Involve the ADA Coordinator and establish an ADA Advisory Sub-committee. Provides review and feedback/input on protocols and procedures affecting access for persons with disabilities during emergency and disaster situations; Makes suggestions for improvements in accessibility in outreach procedures, shelter accessibility and shelter volunteer/staff training; Provides assistance in outreach activities, shelter surveys and training activities.
